The month of August is Harry Potter Month in the Hype or Like Friday group I’m in over on Goodreads! Our book of the month is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and today’s post poses this question:
If you could choose 3 magical items from any Harry Potter book, which would you choose and why? Explain what you would do with them and how you would use them to your advantage.
Since I’m going to assume that I already have a wand, and magical abilities, I’m not going to waste one of my choices on that!
So here are my three choices:
- Wizard’s Chess. Wizard’s chess first appears in book one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I love how clever JK Rowling was in creating Wizard’s Chess, a somewhat regular chessboard, except the pieces are magical. I would keep this around and play it. I’d play against myself and play against my friends. It would be fun and keep me occupied.
- A thestral. I mean c’mon. It’s a reptilian-like black horse that flies, that you can only see once you’ve witnessed death. Thestrals are in every book, but you don’t know they are there until Harry witnesses Cedric’s death at the end of book four. The scene where he and Luna bond after realizing they both can see the thestrals is very touching. I don’t exactly know what I’d do with one, but I would certainly want to have magical creatures around me, and thestrals seem friendlier than dragons. Perhaps I would ride one instead of a broom. Although let’s be honest here. If I’m a witch, and am in the Harry Potter universe, I’m apparating everywhere.
- The Whomping Willow. A giant tree that destroys everything that gets near it. It is just so cool. And looks so nice and peaceful when it isn’t whomping away! Who wouldn’t want one of these in their yard guarding something?? But I guess the yard would have to be awfully big so that the Whomping Willow wouldn’t destroy everything…
Anyways, those are three of the many magical items I’d love to have.
And look for my review of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on the last Friday of the month, August 26th! I haven’t started it yet, so no spoilers please.
And I’ll leave you with this wonderful video. We all need a little DARK LORD FUNK in our lives. The link should take you to YouTube, and I’m sorry for putting this song in your brain. But it’s a great song for a Friday!
What magical items would you want? I almost put Hermione’s beaded bag on here, but then I realized I could create my own! Another one that almost made the cut was The Marauder’s Map. What would your three choices be?
Don’t forget that you have to have seen someone die in order to see Thestrals. I agree they’re pretty cool looking, but I don’t know if that’s a price I’m willing to pay haha.

Yeah, not sure I’m willing to pay that price either! But they are so cool and mysterious. I love the concept behind them and they are my favorite magical creatures, besides dragons.

I love wizard’s chess! 🙂 But they require a damage-proof surrounding, haha. Great picks!

Awesome choices! Wizard’s chess would be so cool. I’d love that. 🙂 If only some of the cool things from HP were real. That would be so awesome.

I read the final two books in the series and though I enjoyed them, I’ve never been much of a Potterhead. And now we have the Cursed Child here. He he.

You really have to read all the books in the series to get the best picture of the HP world. They are amazing books, and the creativity is just wonderful. I love that the books transport me somewhere else.

Yeah well, I can’t be blaming the books without reading all of them, can I? And I actually did like the ones I read. Very creative in how they made the world of Hogwarts and all totally believable.
Have a great week ahead. 🙂

And the earlier books are good too, each book gets more complex as the kids get older and the world just builds and builds. 🙂 Thank you ! You also have a great week !

Great choices! Thestrals are just so adorable (I find almost all the dangerous creatures in HP cute, haha), and the Whomping Willow would be a nice addition to anyone’s front yard! xx

Great picks, these are definitely the most unique choices I’ve seen! Wizard’s chess would be tons of fun and I’d love to use a Whomping Willow to protect my house, but you’re right, it’d have to be a big yard so it wouldn’t destroy the house haha! 🙂

Invisibility cloak, Molly Weasley’s clock and a copy of Hogwarts, A history…I wanted Ravenclaw’s diadem as well, but then thought it was too much!
